Speaker: Joe Sullivan with Powell Orthotics & Prosthetics.  Joe is a Richmond native whose left leg was amputated below the knee in 1970 due to a cancer diagnosis when he was six months old.  He is an athlete and was a member of the USA Men's Paralympic Standing Volleyball team for over 10 years, competing in the Paralympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 and in Sydney in 2000.  In the Richmond area, he has coached volleyball for multiple high school varsity and travel teams.  He is a Certified Prosthetist and has worked in the prosthetic industry for over 25 years. 

Topic: Living with an Amputation and Community re-entry. 

Joe will discuss the amputation process, amputee mentoring, the rehabilitation process, and the timeline between amputation and community re-entry.  More importantly he will talk about mentoring and the support a person needs to transition into a positive functioning lifestyle.
